Great styling isn't about copying exactly what your stylist did. It's about learning what works for your hair, your haircut, and your everyday routine.

Quick Answer
Your hair may look different at home because professional styling involves much more than knowing how to use a blow dryer or curling iron. Your stylist chooses products, tools, and techniques based on your hair's texture, density, haircut, and the finished result you're trying to achieve.
You don't need to become a professional hairstylist to get better results at home. Learning which products work for your hair, how to prepare it before styling, and a few of the techniques your stylist uses can make a big difference.
Key Takeaways
- The right styling products depend on your hair texture, density, and goals.
- Preparation can make as much difference as the styling technique itself.
- Freshly washed hair is often better for styling than dirty hair.
- Some haircuts require more styling than others to look like the inspiration photo.
- Your stylist can show you how to recreate important parts of your style at home.
- The best hairstyle is one that works for your hair, your routine, and how you want to feel.
Styling Is Part of the Finished Result
It's easy to think of a haircut or color as the actual service and styling as the finishing touch. Lauren sees styling as part of the finished product. It's where the color, haircut, layers, and everything else start to come to life.
It's also one reason your hair can look different after you wash and style it yourself. Your haircut and color haven't changed, but some of what you saw when you left the salon came from the way your hair was prepared and styled.
This is especially important when choosing a haircut from an inspiration photo. A certain cut may require blow-drying, curling, product, or daily styling to get the exact look you're seeing. If you prefer to wash your hair and do very little with it, tell your stylist. If you love spending time styling your hair every morning, tell them that too.
Neither is right or wrong. Your stylist just needs to know what your real routine looks like before recommending something you'll have to live with every day.
The Wrong Products Can Make Styling Much Harder
One of the biggest mistakes Lauren sees clients make at home is simply using the wrong products for their hair.
Something that works really well for coarse, curly hair isn't necessarily going to work for someone with fine, straight hair. The same goes for someone trying to create volume versus someone trying to smooth or define curls.
That's why buying the product your friend loves doesn't guarantee you'll get the same result. The same is true for products you see recommended online.
Your hair texture and density matter. So does the style you're trying to create.
Instead of asking, "What's the best styling product?" it can be much more helpful to ask your stylist, "What's the best styling product for my hair and what I'm trying to do with it?"
Preparation Makes a Huge Difference
One of the questions Lauren hears all the time is, "How do I make my hair last?"
The answer depends on the style and the person's hair, but preparation is a big part of it.
What you put in your hair before and after styling can make a huge difference in how well a style holds. Depending on your hair, Lauren might recommend mousse with a little hold, hairspray, or another product that helps support the finished look.
Technique matters too. If you're curling your hair, don't immediately brush the curls out. Letting them cool completely first can help them hold. Pinning the curls or using rollers while they cool can also help you get more out of the style.
There's no single routine that's going to work for everyone. Someone whose hair naturally holds a curl may need very little help, while someone with fine hair that tends to fall quickly may need more preparation.
Is Dirty Hair Really Better for Styling?
This is one of the styling myths Lauren hears most often.
A lot of people have been told that the dirtier their hair is, the better it will hold a style. Lauren actually prefers working with freshly washed hair.
Why?
A stylist can add what clean hair needs. If it needs more texture, grip, or hold, products can help create that. But if your hair is already weighed down with oil or too much product, your stylist can't simply take all of that away.
That doesn't mean you need to wash your hair immediately before every styling appointment. It means you shouldn't deliberately show up with dirty hair because you've heard that's what your stylist wants.
If you're having your hair styled for a wedding or another big event, ask your stylist how they'd like you to prepare it. You don't have to guess.
Your Stylist Can Teach You How to Do It at Home
You probably aren't going to recreate every detail of a professional blowout at home.
That's okay.
But Lauren wants her clients to understand what she's doing and why she's doing it. She tries to explain things as she goes and physically show clients how to recreate parts of the style themselves.
This is especially helpful with things like bangs and layers. Sometimes a small change in the direction you're holding the blow dryer or the way you're using a brush can completely change how those parts of the haircut sit.
Ask questions while your stylist is working. Ask how much product they're using. Ask when they're putting it in. Ask how they're drying your bangs or which direction they're curling a section.
You don't have to learn how to be a hairstylist. You just need to learn how to work with your hair.
Special-Event Hair Should Still Feel Like You
Weddings, proms, and other big events are usually when clients bring in the most inspiration photos. That's a good thing. Lauren always recommends bringing pictures so you and your stylist can make sure you're talking about the same look.
But she also encourages clients to choose styles they actually feel comfortable wearing.
A big event doesn't necessarily mean you need to look completely different from yourself. If you never wear your hair pulled tightly away from your face, your wedding day might not be the best time to discover whether you like yourself that way.
Lauren finds that clients often feel their best when they don't stray too far from the kinds of styles that already make them feel confident.
Your inspiration photo is still useful. It's just a starting point.
Your stylist can look at the picture, look at your hair, and tell you what they think will work best based on your texture, density, length, and hair needs. For a major event, a consultation or trial can make that conversation even more valuable.
Protect Your Hair While You're Styling It
If Lauren could give everyone one styling tip, it would be simple: Use heat protectant.
If you're regularly using a blow dryer, curling iron, flat iron, or other hot tools, protecting your hair from that heat should be part of your routine.
How often you style matters too. Someone using hot tools every day is asking something very different of their hair than someone who curls it once a week.
The goal isn't just to make your hair look good today. You also want to maintain its health so it continues to look and feel good over time.
The Best Style Has to Work in Your Real Life
This may be the most important part.
The best hairstyle isn't necessarily the most impressive one. It's the one that makes you feel confident and is realistic for your lifestyle.
Some people genuinely enjoy styling their hair every morning. Other people want to spend five minutes on it and get out the door. Your stylist needs to know which person you are.
That information can affect everything from the haircut you choose to the products your stylist recommends.
Bring the inspiration photos. Show your stylist what you love. But also be honest about how much time and effort you want to put into recreating that look at home.
Lauren's job isn't simply to copy the picture. It's to give you her professional opinion about what will work for you and your hair.
The finished result should still feel like you.
Frequently Asked Questions
If you've ever left the salon wondering how you're supposed to make your hair look that way again, you're not alone. Here are answers to some of the styling questions Lauren hears most often from clients.
Why does my hair look different when my stylist does it?
Your stylist is making dozens of small decisions based on your specific hair. That includes which products to use, how much to use, how to prepare your hair, which tools to choose, and which techniques will create the result you want. You may not recreate every part of a professional style at home, but learning a few of those decisions can make styling your own hair much easier.
Do I need to use the same products my stylist uses?
Not necessarily every product. What's more important is using products that are right for your hair and the style you're trying to create. Fine, straight hair usually won't need the same products as coarse, curly hair. Ask your stylist which products matter most for your routine and what each one is actually doing.
Is dirty hair better for styling?
Not necessarily. Lauren generally prefers freshly washed hair because she can add texture and hold with styling products when needed. Hair that's already weighed down with oil or product buildup can actually be harder to work with. If you're preparing for a professional styling appointment, especially for a big event, ask your stylist how they'd like you to arrive.
How can I make my curls last longer?
Preparation is important. The right styling products can help create hold before you curl, but what you do afterward matters too. Let your curls cool completely before brushing them out. Depending on your hair, pinning the curls or using rollers while they cool can also help. Your stylist can recommend an approach based on how well your particular hair holds a curl.
How can I recreate my salon hairstyle at home?
Ask your stylist to show you while they're doing it. Lauren likes to explain her process as she works, especially with areas like bangs and layers that can be frustrating at home. Pay attention to the few techniques that make the biggest difference rather than trying to memorize every step of the appointment.
Should I bring inspiration photos to a styling appointment?
Yes. Inspiration photos make it much easier for you and your stylist to make sure you're picturing the same thing. Just remember that they're inspiration, not a guarantee that the exact style will behave the same way on every person. Your stylist may suggest adjustments based on your hair texture, density, length, haircut, and how well your hair holds a style.
Should I have a consultation or trial before wedding or special-event hair?
For an important event, a consultation or trial can be extremely helpful. It gives you and your stylist time to look at inspiration photos, talk about what you normally feel comfortable wearing, and see how a particular style works with your hair. It also gives your stylist a chance to recommend changes before the event instead of figuring everything out on the day itself.

"Great hair starts with great communication!"
What do you enjoy most about helping clients with their hair?
For me, styling is the finished product. It's where the color, haircut, and everything else we've worked on really comes to life. It's also the part where people get to see themselves with the finished look, and I love seeing them feel like their best selves.
Who is your ideal client?
I love working with clients who want something customized to them. Some of my clients love styling their hair every day, and others want something much lower maintenance. I want to understand your lifestyle, what you like, and what you're realistically going to do with your hair at home so we can find something that works for you.
How do you help someone who's nervous or visiting for the first time?
I always recommend bringing inspiration pictures because they give us a really good place to start. We'll talk through what you like about them, what you're hoping for, and what will realistically work with your hair. I'm also going to give you my professional opinion if I think something different would work better for you or your hair needs.
How do you decide what's best for each client?
I look at the client's hair texture, density, haircut, lifestyle, and what they're trying to achieve. Styling doesn't look the same for everyone. Someone with fine, straight hair isn't going to use the same products or necessarily the same techniques as someone with coarse, curly hair. It has to be customized to the person.
What's one misconception you hear all the time?
That the dirtier the hair, the better it is for styling. Freshly washed hair is actually best for styling in a lot of situations. As stylists, we can always add products to give the hair what it needs, but we can't take away oil or heavy product that's already weighing it down.
What's one piece of advice you wish every client knew?
Always use a product with heat protectant when you're using hot tools. It's such a simple thing, but it makes a difference when you're trying to maintain the overall health of your hair.
What do you hope every client feels when they leave?
Confident. Whatever style you choose should be something you feel comfortable in and something that's realistic for your lifestyle. I want you to love how your hair looks when you leave, but I also want you to feel like you understand your hair a little better.
